Who Owns What? by Barbara Kruger [Kenneth Carrasco's Choice] (MAIN FOCUS OF SHORT FILM)
WHO OWNS WHAT?
by BARBARA KRUGER
Barbara Kruger’s “Who Owns What?” is an image that she produced in 2012, her style is quite noticeable as she utilized found photographs that are then manipulated. Kruger has consistently focused on the themes of social and gender inequality. She was prominently known for having a similar visual style as other advertising companies at the time. It is an image that questions the ownership of property. Kruger continues to inspire a movement as the issue of ownership is still ambiguous in terms of which gender is more prominent. An example of this is the recent events occurring in the film industry. Male actors have been paid more than female actors due to their performances and prominence in the film industry. Gradually this issue has been improving as the film companies are now committed to bring equal pay to all actors in the industry.
I my opinion ideas do not just develop from thin air, being original is impossible. In all kinds of media concepts are formed through inspiration and development of starting points. We as humans envision a new concept that was inspired by certain techniques, methods or styles. In the music industry, Electronic Dance Music has become popular because of the variety of songs produced annually; however most of these songs are produced with older beats. In the film industry we always see remakes, reboots or homages to well known films.
Tom Hunter’s photography is a testament to the concept of of being original as he takes inspiration from paintings to develop modern photographs. We take a concept from somebody else and bring new life to it. Every artist or practitioner was inspired by an idea and overtime the amalgamation of concepts would lead to unique and original ideas. This is how I would present it in a contemporary way. Being inspired by other people and taking those techniques and methods to develop a new concept and bring new life to it.
Its ambiguity and defying meaning questions how we individuals create our own concepts. The group has agreed on focusing on Kruger's piece. The question of Who Owns What? enables us as a team to explore its message with no boundaries. I have been inspired by a number of directors and their visual style. I aim to utilize Nolan's visual style and Tarantino's story-telling techniques to portray a story of a young man who is eager to formulate is own original film.
