Nixon, Nam June Paik 2002

Nixon by Nam June Paik was conceived in 1965 and released in 2002. 2 video screens and attached magnetic coils causes the image to jump and warp. Disrupted presidential television footage of Richard Nixon and the date the installation was made shows us the interest of Nam June Paik in digitalization of moving image and its consequences.

The author tries to show us how media footage can be manipulated. In 1970s a TV remote control started to be easy to use and easily accessible. This was the time when everybody was fascinated by possibilities of television and its "simplicity". It was immediately used by politicians as television started to be advertising (propaganda) channel.  The footage of Watergate scandal in 1974 that ends the TV presentation is an example of corruption and manipulation. Nam June Paik suggest that this digital control was one of Nixons actions regarding his illegal organization that was the reason of his swindle.

"In 1960s America, the television broadcasting industry was controlled by a set of rules and standards that dictated what could and could not be shown. For Paik, however, television represented a two-way communication network that was both voyeuristic and participatory – not simply a means by which to receive state programming." ~ Hannah Dewar, May 2013
